Builds technical solutions using AI, automation, data, and Axon tools to solve operational challenges for public safety agencies.
At Axon, we’re on a mission to Protect Life. We’re explorers, pursuing society’s most critical safety and justice issues with our ecosystem of devices and cloud software. Like our products, we work better together. We connect with candor and care, seeking out diverse perspectives from our customers, communities and each other.
Life at Axon is fast-paced, challenging and meaningful. Here, you’ll take ownership and drive real change. Constantly grow as you work hard for a mission that matters at a company where you matter.
This isn’t a relationship management role. It’s an ownership role. Sharp. Adaptable. Unstoppable. As a Mission Engineer II, you’ll work directly alongside public safety agencies to turn real operational challenges into working technical solutions.
You’ll spend time with the people doing the work, understand how the agency operates, identify problems worth solving, and use Axon tools, AI, automation, data, and the broader Axon ecosystem to build against them.
Building is the core of the role, but customer needs come first. Because you’re embedded with the agency, you’ll also become a go-to technical resource who understands their Axon environment and helps them navigate critical needs when they arise. You may help quarterback an upcoming deployment, coordinate a complex technical issue, or connect the right Axon teams around an agency priority.
You won’t replace Support, Deployment, Product, or other teams. You’ll bring technical continuity, help connect the dots, and use what you learn to identify the next opportunity to build something better. Mission Engineers don’t measure success by activity. They measure it by what gets built, what gets used, and what changes because of it.
Location: On Site with travel
Reports To: Manager or Senior Manager of Mission Engineering
You can take a meaningful customer problem through:
Discover → Build → Transform
Given Axon’s approved toolkit, and a problem worth solving, you can turn it into a working solution and demonstrate whether it created value. And when the agency needs you elsewhere, you lean in without losing the engineering mindset—help solve the immediate need, identify what can be improved, and return to building.
Benefits listed herein may vary depending on the nature of your employment and the location where you work
Don’t meet every single requirement? That’s ok. At Axon, we Aim Far. We think big with a long-term view because we want to reinvent the world to be a safer, better place. We are also committed to building diverse teams that reflect the communities we serve.
Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they check every box in the job description. If you’re excited about this role and our mission to Protect Life but your experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification listed here, we encourage you to apply anyways. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
Important Notes
The above job description is not intended as, nor should it be construed as, exhaustive of all duties, responsibilities, skills, efforts, or working conditions associated with this job. The job description may change or be supplemented at any time in accordance with business needs and conditions.

Local journalist reports on Phoenix news, curates community-focused newsletter content, and builds audience engagement through storytelling across multiple platforms.
The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.
The New York Times launched a newsletter this summer in Minneapolis-St. Paul as a pilot for a new local journalism initiative. We are now expanding, and seeking to hire two entrepreneurial, digital-savvy journalists in Phoenix.
In this role, you will serve as host or contributor to The Local: Phoenix, a blend of essential and delightful information designed to make readers more connected to their community and more conversant around the news. The newsletter will be a bridge connecting Nashville to the full breadth of The Times and Games, Wirecutter, NYT Cooking and The Athletic. It will showcase high-quality independent journalism from local sources, and partner with Nashville news organizations.
You will help Phoenix natives and newcomers alike understand the forces driving change around them. You will introduce audiences to interesting characters and places; moderate and drive conversation; curate the best locally relevant content from a wide range of sources; and build relationships with readers through callouts, social media and in-person events.
Candidates should be deeply rooted in Phoenix and have significant experience covering the area, whether in news, politics, business, sports, culture or some combination. You must have a clear understanding of what makes their region tick as well as its media ecosystem and audience needs. You do not, however, need a traditional newspaper background — we are interested in storytellers fluent in a variety of forms and platforms. Experience as a “host” — of a podcast, newsletter, video series or live events — is a plus.
The reporters will work in Phoenix and be part of the newsletter team. Please submit resume, cover letter and about six work samples of any format — for example, newsletters, videos or traditional clips.
Responsibilities:
Work with colleagues to shape the tone, structure and content of The Local: Phoenix
Help select topics of focus, do original reporting, and incorporate items from others on the team
Read, watch and listen widely and deeply across local media, including influencers, in order to support and showcase the best journalism in the region. When appropriate, partner on coverage and other initiatives with local outlets
Collaborate with staff of The Local in other cities and New York to maximize reach and impact
Experiment with formats and content mixes, including Q&As, features, data stories, explainers and visual presentations
Seek out opportunities to connect with readers and build community, both online and in person
Shape and maintain The Local’s presence on social platforms, looking for opportunities to innovate
Monitor the latest in how other news organizations and brands are engaging their communities and building fandom, and look for ways to leverage those ideas
Help develop engagement goals and track our progress against them, using data to inform our understanding of what is working and to seed innovation and experiments
Represent The Local at community/media events and help plan/run our own
Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
